Rig none yet, fishing out of a buddy's 2008 Triton 18 XS

new here, first post. i am 31, i fish Hamilton and Ouachita out of my buddy's Triton, and i want my own glitter boat by spring. i have about 34,000 to work with including a credit union loan i already have approved.

i have been watching the repo lots on conaway's and there are a few boats in my range. what scares me is not the hull or the motor, it is the paperwork. somebody at the ramp told me a boat is really three things with three numbers, the hull, the trailer and the motor, and that each one can have a different story. a buddy's uncle bought a boat years ago where the motor turned out to have come off a different boat entirely.

so if i am looking at a listing on the conaway auction site, how do i check that the hull ID, the trailer VIN and the outboard serial all belong together and match what the paperwork will say. where are they on the boat, and what do i ask for if the photo is not there.

Rig 2018 Phoenix 819 Pro, Mercury 250 Pro XS

good first post, and the right question. the hull first.

the HIN is 12 characters on the upper starboard side of the transom, molded in or on a plate. first three letters are the builder's code. next five are the builder's serial for that hull. then a letter for the month it was built, a digit for the year, and two digits for the model year. so a hull ending in A920 was built in January 2019 as a 2020 model. there is usually a second, hidden HIN somewhere inside the hull that only the builder and law enforcement know about.

what you want: the transom HIN in the photos, and the same HIN on the title or registration that comes with the boat. if the transom plate looks pried, sanded or newer than the boat, walk away.

the motor. on a Mercury the serial is on a tag on the transom clamp bracket, and there is usually a second sticker on the engine itself under the cowl. on a Yamaha it is on a tag on the bracket too. those two should match each other. if a motor is missing the bracket tag, ask why.

with the serial, any dealer for that brand can look up warranty registration and sometimes service history. i do it for people at the counter. the serial will also tell you the model year of the motor, which does not always match the boat. a 2020 hull with a 2018 motor is not always a problem, but it should be on the listing and in the price.

i just did this on my ZXR. the listing already had a photo of the HIN plate and the Yamaha bracket tag. the trailer VIN photo was blurry, so i emailed and asked for it again, plus a shot of the motor sticker under the cowl. conaways sent new photos two days later, all sharp. take the HIN and the motor serial to a dealer and ask them to look it up, like the tech said. mine came back clean.

the trailer has its own title in Kentucky and in Oklahoma, which is where mine came from. the boat paperwork and the trailer paperwork came in the same envelope.

trailer VINs are the one that bites people. on a lot of bass boat trailers it is a sticker on the tongue, and stickers fade, peel or get pressure washed off. on mine it is also stamped into the frame at the front of the tongue, under paint. if the sticker is gone, ask them to look for the stamp.

Arkansas wants a trailer registered, so you need that number to match the title or you will be at the revenue office twice.

update since you all gave me homework. i won a 2019 Phoenix 721 ProXP with a Mercury 200 Pro XS and a Phoenix trailer, 31,400 bid, from a lender yard in Mississippi. not a big boat. a real one though.

before i bid i did all three. HIN on the transom photo, the Mercury bracket tag, the trailer VIN sticker. the trailer sticker was half peeled like trailer_lights_again said, so i asked and the conaways people sent a photo of the stamp on the tongue the next day. took the HIN and the motor serial to a Mercury dealer in Hot Springs, they ran it, 2019 motor, warranty registered to a dealer in Jackson, nothing weird.

it came yesterday. the numbers on the notarized paperwork, the boat and the trailer all match, i sat in the driveway and checked every one of them with my phone flashlight like a crazy person. conaway's auto sales had it to me eleven days after the wire. revenue office is monday.
